J. Arthur and Mary Virginia Haley Memorial Library Collection

The J. Arthur and Mary Virginia Haley Memorial Library Collection was established in 1984 by the children of the late Art and Mary Haley. Art worked for the University as business manager of the department of athletics and then as inaugural director of public relations. His tenure included the construction of Notre Dame Stadium and the Rockne Memorial. He coordinated the University’s Centennial Celebration and assisted in the establishment of the Board of Trustees and advisory councils. He also planned dedication ceremonies for 30 major new buildings and instigated Junior Parents Weekend. Art’s wife, Mary, helped found and nurture the Notre Dame Women’s Advisory Council, serving as longtime secretary. The couple had four children: John Jr. ('51), George ('52), Patricia ('75 M.A.), and Thomas ('57).

Unrestricted and versatile, the Haley Memorial Collection supports library resources, programs, and service needs in response to evolving University priorities. Students and faculty use journals, books, databases, and collections for study and discovery in every field. As such, this endowment supports a myriad of scholarly work. Two items of note as funded through general library funds is a subscription to Jane’s Sentinel Country Risk Assessment, a product including over 200 reports on UN recognized countries, territories, and commonwealths, and the Joint Publications Research Service Reports, 1957-1994, which is an archive of intelligence-related scientific, technical, and social science materials. Due to its flexibility, this endowment truly is vital, as annually it funds the area of greatest need and will do so in perpetuity.
