Jackoboice Family Collection in Journalism

The Jackoboice Family Collection in Journalism was established in 1988, in memory of George Jackoboice Sr. (’31), by his wife Helen (Gast) Jackoboice and the couple’s three sons. While at Notre Dame, George majored in journalism and dreamed of becoming a writer.  Instead, he went directly into the family business, becoming president of Monarch Road Machinery—part of an institution founded by his grandfather in 1856.

The Jackoboice Family Collection allows the Libraries to acquire out-of-print titles and provide access to major historical newspapers in digital format, enhancing the research conducted by students and faculty, as they are able to use important primary sources not otherwise available to the Notre Dame community. These newspaper collections are especially important for undergraduates who are not able to travel to libraries and archives off-campus. As the field of journalism changes over time, the Libraries also use the fund to add monographs to the collection, which reflect changes and challenges in the field.

George and Helen have had several children and grandchildren attend Notre Dame. Their son John ('66) established the John S. Jackoboice Family Endowment In Memory of Mary Ann Jackoboice.
