Donald T. McAllister, M.D. and Family Endowed Collection in Science

The Donald T. McAllister, M.D. and Family Endowed Collection in Science was established in 1994. Don (’60) is an orthopedic surgeon and senior member of the Louisville Orthopedic Clinic. He has five children, three of whom are Notre Dame graduates: Shannon (’89), Kevin (’97), and Michael (’02). His wife, Diane, is a registered nurse.

The McAllister Family Collection ensures that Notre Dame scientists studying the zebrafish, an organism of growing importance in both research and teaching in vertebrate genetics and developmental biology, have the appropriate resources to research the processes of macular degeneration and other degenerative diseases. It provides materials for the study of human parasites, their arthropod vectors, and the human response to infection. It also supports the exploration of solutions to global environmental problems based on an understanding of undisturbed natural habitats and biological diversity. Several new journal subscriptions were made possible through funding from this endowment:  Diabetes, Fly, Biology Letters, the British Medical Journal, and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology
