Edward H. Arnold Family Endowment for Germanic Studies

The Edward H. Arnold Family Endowment for Germanic Studies was established in 1990 by Edward H. “E.H.” Arnold (’61). It provides significant support for the development of Germanic Studies book collections and electronic resources in the Hesburgh Libraries. E.H. is the former chairman, CEO, and president of Arnold Industries Inc. He has been a member of Hesburgh Libraries Advisory Council since 1991. His wife, Jeanne, retired as the senior vice president of patient care services at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

The endowment has made a considerable impact on the humanities collection, which is a foundational piece of the liberal arts education at Notre Dame. Recently it made possible the addition of approximately 600 new titles.

Given all that the study of German encompasses, Germanic studies affords students the opportunity to investigate myriad other disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, literature, and art. It is critical that students and faculty have access to an array of resources, both current and historical. The purchase of materials by major German authors and literary criticism, both of which have been escalating in price, would not be possible without this fund.

Other Arnold endowments include the Arnold Library Endowment for Digital Access and the Jeanne and Edward Arnold Library Endowment in Science and Engineering. The Arnolds have also established the Edward H. Arnold University Librarian.
