Fort Howard Corporation Endowed Collection in Western European History

The Fort Howard Corporation Endowed Collection in Western European History was established in 1985 by Paul and Carol Schierl. The Fort Howard Corporation, which merged with Georgia-Pacific, is a diversified manufacturer of paper products. Paul (’57, ’61 J.D.) retired as chairman and CEO of Fort Howard in 1990, and serves as president of the Cornerstone Foundation of Northeastern Wisconsin, Inc.

At Notre Dame, Paul was a longstanding member of the Law School Advisory Council. He and Carol are members of the Badin Guild, the Sorin Society, and the Order of St. Thomas More. They have five children, all of whom are Notre Dame or Saint Mary’s graduates.

The Fort Howard Endowment has made possible the purchase of advanced resources, particularly with respect to important reference works and volumes in social history. Outstanding examples include The Encyclopedia of the Third Reich, edited by Christian Zentner; The Cambridge Social History of Britain, 1750–1950, edited by F.M.L. Thompson; and Joan Perkins’ Women and Marriage in 19th Century England. The collection has also added resources on topics such as the Reformation, European intellectual history, and the German-speaking regions of Central Europe. A recent purchase, funded by the endowment, was an important five-volume publication of Jesuit letters from the 16th century.

The Schierls have also supported the Eck Hall of Law, law fellowships, and the Paul and Carol Schierl Law School Endowment for the Study of the Legal Issues of the Civil War.
