Michael and Sylvia Mallardi and Family General Library Endowment

In Memory of William H. Fallon ('37)

The Michael and Sylvia Mallardi and Family General Library Endowment was established in 1998 by Mike and Sylvia in memory of Bill Fallon (’37). It was Bill who first sparked Mike’s interest in Notre Dame, bringing him to campus when he was just 15 years old. Bill sponsored Mike for Notre Dame’s New York Alumni Club Scholarship and arranged for on-campus employment at the Hesburgh Library to supplement the partial scholarship. Mike graduated magna cum laude in 1956 and went on to serve with the Army before beginning his career in broadcasting at ABC, Inc. Currently retired, Mike has served on the boards of several industry and charitable organizations, including Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters Advisory Council. He and Sylvia, have two daughters, Karen and Stephanie.

The Mallardi Endowment allows the Hesburgh Libraries to make progress despite changing environmental factors, escalating costs, and the necessity of training and retraining library personnel to keep them on the cutting edge of the information curve. Two items of note, as supported through general library funds, are Jane’s Sentinel Country Risk Assessment, a product including more than 200 reports on U.N. recognized countries, territories, and commonwealths, and the Joint Publications Research Service Reports, 1957-1994, which is an archive of intelligence-related scientific, technical, and social science materials. Due to its flexibility, this endowment truly is vital, as annually it funds the area of greatest need, and will do so in perpetuity.
