Philip J. Fagan, Jr., M.D., and Family Endowed Library Collection in Honor of Philip J. Fagan, Sr., M.D.

The Philip J. Fagan Jr., M.D., and Family Endowed Library Collection in Honor of Philip J. Fagan, Sr., M.D., was established in 1990 by Dr. Philip Fagan, Jr. (’65). Phil was influenced in his choice of profession by the example of his father, the late Philip J. Fagan, Sr., an orthopedic surgeon of Portland, Oregon.

Phil, a leader in the field of emergency medicine and a distinguished member of the southern California medical community, earned his degree in medicine at Tulane University and once taught at Notre Dame. He has served on the Hesburgh Libraries Advisory Council since 1990. He is the father of three sons: Scott (’00), John Philip, and Brad. Phil and his wife, Devona Bastiaans-Fagan, reside in Henderson, NV.

The Fagan Endowment enables the Hesburgh Libraries’ acquisition of costly biomedical literature and other research materials, from neurophysiology to immunology, genetics, and virology. In recent years, it has facilitated the addition of multiple new journal subscriptions essential to the University’s research. The growth of the Fagan Collection supports Notre Dame’s rigorous undergraduate and graduate programs in the biological and biomedical sciences, as well as state-of-the-art research initiatives directed by our faculty. Phil has also supported the Jordan Hall of Science.
