Teaching music and speech and serving as a school librarian, Marilouise Smith Condon, from Davis, Oklahoma, had a profound impact on many lives. She was active in and out of the classroom, serving as president of the Oklahoma Women Deans and Counselors, working with American Field Service and Student Council, sponsoring the school patrol, and coordinating the American College Testing Program for graduating students. 

Admired greatly by both students and peers, she is best remembered by her loving family. Together with her husband, John, she had two children, Patricia Louise Condon Rhees and John William Condon (’58), a member of the Advisory Council for the Hesburgh Libraries. They also had 10 grandchildren, including Melissa Anne Condon Adams (’84). 

Marilouise devoted her life to educating young people, a tradition that continues in perpetuity with the Marilouise Smith Condon Computer Science and Engineering Department Endowment Collection. The collection was established in loving memory by her son, John. 

Supporting a flourishing department that boasts a research-intensive faculty and a high-caliber student body, the Condon Endowment provides resource support for a broad curriculum whose areas of concentration include VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), parallel and distributed computing, artificial intelligence, computer architecture, discrete mathematics, and neural networks. 

With the assistance of the Condon Endowment, the Hesburgh Libraries are able to acquire the journals, books, technical reports, conference proceedings, reference materials, and electronic resources needed to ensure the continued strength and vitality of the dynamic field of computer science and engineering at Notre Dame.
